Dec 21, 2012: Doomsday?

There has been a lot of discussion and speculation about the doomsday. Astrologers and New Age Gurus have created hype and played on the credulity of many of us and they continue to do so. There are millions of books, websites, mails and pamphlets circulated all over the world since the beginning of this millennium, which have focused on so called ‘urgency’ of the situation and I very vividly remember that similar urgency was created by media in year 1999.  This thread is not going to provide you something out of world for that matter. I intend to indulge in a very mediocre discussion for a while. It would be my attempt to express what I feel has caused such widespread speculations. Let me try to take up tools of terror first and then intentions behind misinformation. The first and foremost is the Mayan calendars. Maya was ancient American civilization which collapsed for some inexplicable reasons. Mayan civilization was in many ways a very developed civilization and they had an entirely different way of counting days and nights and years. For some reasons, which are as inexplicable as the seemingly sudden collapse of Mayan civilization, there were calculations of time done until Dec 21, 2012 and no more. This seems to be the main source of speculation for Astrologers, self-proclaimed messiahs and New Age Gurus to suggest that year 2012 is too critical a year to overlook.

In an article written by some New Age Gurus, which I read 10 years ago, it was clearly stated that 2012 is the year of ascension and only those who would be enough conscious would get an ascension, which is, the elevation of consciousness to the next level. It was written that the earth will stand still and the direction of its rotation on its axis would change. Those who are not enough conscious would either be killed or would feel no change whatsoever. What a catch! If 2012 passes and you ask a New Age Specialist: “I observed no changes whatsoever”; you are very likely to receive the message: “Since you’re not enough ripened, you did not witness any significant changes, whereas so many of us have transcended many limitations and the entire planet as a whole has ascended!” There is no way out of this catch 22 and they’re running an entire industry around it.

What I have to say, personally to all Gurus (New Age or otherwise) and to those creators of urgencies is: There is no urgency. There would never be one as far as spiritual matters are concerned. To beguile credulous people seeking mental peace, Gurus create urgencies and emphasize over and again that they are the only saviors, Avatars and Gurus of their age; that there is no other way, that there is a need to follow them because theirs is the only way. I do not support any such claims. Moreover, I seriously doubt anyone coming up with the ‘ultimate truth’; no matter how exalted they look from the outset.

There is no urgency as far as knowing truth is concerned and there is no auspicious or inauspicious time in this regard. It’s not that in 2012 you would meditate for an hour and would turn into the while peaceful light and would start having visions. No, it’s not. It would remain same quest always.

Then, there are conspiracy theorists. They suggest that The Illuminati is trying to create new world order. Some of them say that they have already created it. They are allegedly trying to create some crisis which would be fatal and worldwide and this crisis would reduce the world population to a meager 50 million. Then there would be just one world government ruled by The Illuminati. The Illuminati would be eternal rulers and the rest of the population would be eternal slaves. The worldwide phobia of doomsday is a promise for such conspiracies because in disguise of natural apocalyptic catastrophes they would try to kill all of us. This is another source of fear about 2012.

Then, there is Sun spot cycle. I am not an expert but there seems to be some conspicuous correlation between sun spots and weather in space. Sun spots are magnetic activities in Sun due to which there are relatively dark spots on the surface of Sun. Here is an extract from NASA Science news which was published in 2006:

“It's official: Solar minimum has arrived. Sunspots have all but vanished. Solar flares are nonexistent. The Sun is utterly quiet.Like the quiet before a storm. This week researchers announced that a storm is coming--the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one," she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958.”

This scientific observation accompanied with the end of the Mayan calendar became the tool of terror for Astrologers in various parts of the world. There was significant rise in the sales of New Age and Astrological stuffs.

There is no mention of this doomsday in Vedic Astrology and there are no grave transits occurring in 2012 to suggest an apocalypse. Even if there is one: I would not prefer going to a Guru. I do not think that I would be doing anything else than what I am already doing.

My question is: What according to you reinforces such predictions? Is it the fear inherent in human DNA (of extinction) or media tactics for increased circulation or something else?

You might have observed so many Hollywood movies on themes of apocalypse, where some virus or natural disaster or some alien species is hell bent on destroying humanity. What is the cause of investment of so much of time, energy and money in such entertainment?
